Sean Winns INT

Carolina Spartans defensive back Sean Winns (17) intercepts a pass against the Palmetto Hurricanes in the 2019 season. Also defending is Tre’ Young (3).

The Carolina Spartans semi-pro football team has begun building for the spring 2020 season and is hosting a combine July 13 at Westview Elementary in Goose Creek.

The combine begins at 9 a.m.

The Spartans compete in the Independent American Football League.

The IAFL just completed its second season and was a 40-team league. The Atlanta Metro Horsemen defeated the Sumter Sharks for the 2019 title in Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium.

The Garden City Seahawks from Augusta, Ga., won the first IAFL title in 2018.

The Spartans, who played their home games at Cainhoy Elementary last season, were 1-7 with a roster of 30-plus players. Building more depth is a priority ahead of next season.

“We want to dress at least 53 players,” Spartans general manager Terry Jackson said. “If we can get the roster up to 65 or so, we’d have enough for a practice squad. That would be really huge for us.”

Jackson said he expected more than 20 players to return for the 2020 season. The first game will be in March and the Spartans will have periodic practices the rest of 2019.

The 2020 IAFL championship game is also set for Chattanooga.
