Berkeley forward Ishan White, who averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds in the regular season, was named Region 7-AAAAA Player of the Year.

Forward Trevur Smalls and guard DJ Chisolm also earned all-region honors for the Stags.

Other Berkeley County School District selections were Goose Creek guard Travelle Simmons, Goose Creek forward Jamel McGowan, Stratford forward Kamal Whaley, Stratford guard DeAndre Johnson and Cane Bay guard Mitchell Davis.

Berkeley boys 90 Cane Bay 51

Trevur Smalls led all scorers with 22 points and the Berkeley Stags raced out to a 23-point lead after a quarter en route to a 90-51 victory at Cane Bay on Friday.

Hakeem Meggett and Ishan White added 14 and 12 respectively for the Stags (22-1, 10-0 Region 7-AAAAA), who completed a clean sweep of all region foes. They begin the playoffs at home on Wednesday against Blythewood.

In the girls game, Cane Bay edged Berkeley 43-39. The Lady Stags still advance to the Class 5A playoffs and travel to top-seeded Fort Dorchester on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Cane Bay’s girls, who finished 7-14 and 3-7 in the region, had just two seniors so most of the team can return next season.

Northwood Academy 50 First Baptist 41

Northwood Academy’s girls basketball team extended its win streak to 15 games with a nine-point victory over First Baptist on Feb. 8.

Northwood (24-6, 7-0 region) ends the regular season on Feb. 12 against Porter-Gaud. The Chargers begin the SCISA state tournament on Feb. 15. The championship games are Saturday, Feb. 23.

Upward Stars tryouts on Feb. 16

Tryouts for the Charleston Upward Stars basketball organization are slated for Saturday, Feb. 16 at Fort Dorchester High School.

The first group goes at 10 a.m. (14-U, 15-U) followed by the next group at 1 p.m. (16-U, 17-U).
