Charleston Post 166 was involved in its first rout of the summer on June 3 and finished the second week of the American Legion season with a 2-1 mark.
Post 166 scored four runs in the first inning and five in the sixth inning, which was more than enough support for starting pitcher John Shelton in a 10-0 victory over visiting Hampton Post 108.
It ended via mercy rule after Post 166’s second big inning.
Shelton threw 84 pitches in two-hitting Hampton, striking out a pair and walking two. He allowed a pair of singles in the first and second inning.
“Tonight, his mindset was to pitch to contact and use the defense,” Post 166 coach David Horton said. “The defense we had out there tonight was pretty good and made a lot of plays.”
Charleston was 2-1 in its first three games, decided by a total of five runs. One of those was a 6-4 loss at Hampton to begin the season.
“We wanted to stay near the top of the standings so we needed to win this one,” Horton said.
Both teams moved to 3-1 in League 1 play.
Post 108 helped the home team with a pair of errors in the bottom of the first inning and Post 166 shortstop Josh Davis drove in a pair on a single to right field to make it 2-0.
Post 166 outfielder Caleb Singleton forced in a run with a walk and Sean Farrell singled in the last run of the first.
In the third, Post 166 designated hitter Travis Lott reached on a fielder’s choice and came home on a passed ball, making it 5-0.
Charleston put it away with a five spot in the sixth.
Lott singled in the first run and Blake Marrs doubled in a pair.
A RBI triple by Davis set up DJ Matthews to end it via walkoff on a RBI single.
Lott, Marrs, Davis and Matthews had two hits apiece for Post 166.
Orangeburg 8 Charleston 4
Orangeburg Post 4 used a five-run fifth inning to double up Charleston Post 166 on June 4.
Post 166 made two costly errors in the inning as Orangeburg overcame a 4-2 deficit.
John Shelton led Post 166 with three hits while Blake Marrs and Travis Lott chipped in two apiece.
Post 166 had seven players out for various reasons, including graduation.
Charleston 7 Manning-Santee 4
Charleston Post 166 scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to improve to 4-2 in League 1 play with an extra-innings victory at Manning-Santee on June 6.
In the eighth, Post 166 drew four walks and scored the go-ahead run on an error.
Josh Davis and John Shelton knocked in the next two runs.
Noah Panezich threw two innings to earn the win in relief.
