Goose Creek High School boys basketball coach Blake Hall expects Travelle Simmons to have a productive college career.
The senior guard issued a verbal commitment to Erskine College on May 21 and will head to Due West after graduation next month. He wasn’t averse to constructive criticism, a plus for any young athlete.
“It really came down to him being a committed young man who wanted to learn,” Hall said. “He was so coachable. He continued to improve over the years. He was patient and kept working.”
As a senior, Simmons led the Gators with 13 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Simmons was named to the all-region team as the Gators advanced to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
He finished his career as a three-year letterman and was most valuable player of the Stall preseason tournament.
“I think he does it all,” Hall said. “He can shoot it. He defends the point of attack well. He rebounds well. All of it has to improve at the next level but he’ll do what he did here. It can be an easier transition for him than it would be for most high school players.”
The Flying Fleet plays in NCAA Div. II’s Conference Carolinas and was 14-13 last season.
