Cane Bay’s football season came to a close with a 16-9 loss to West Ashley.

Cane Bay High School’s football season and playing career for nearly 30 Cobras seniors is over after a tough loss in the opening round of the Class AAAAA playoffs on Friday.

West Ashley scored the go-ahead touchdown in the closing minutes and then snagged an interception inside its own 10 with 13 seconds left to earn a hard-fought 16-9 victory at Cane Bay. It was the second time the Wildcats edged Cane Bay in a thriller this fall. They clipped the Cobras 25-22 in Week 0.

West Ashley (6-5) advances to the second round and will travel to defending champion Dutch Fork, which is unbeaten this season. Cane Bay finishes 5-6 in its first season as a Class 5A program. The Cobras were second in the Region 7-AAA standings.

All of Cane Bay’s points came via the right leg of kicker Ryder Wishart. He made boots of 23, 33 and 40 yards in the first half as the Cobras trailed 10-9 at halftime.

Wendell Goodwin had 83 yards rushing to lead the Cobras.

Charleston Southern 16, Gardner-Webb 0

It was a successful Senior Day for the Charleston Southern football team on Saturday.

The Buccaneers kept Gardner-Webb out of the end zone en route to a 16-0 victory in a Big South Conference game. CSU had 11 tackles for loss, including seven sacks in the victory.

Stratford High School product Tyler Tekac nailed a career-long field goal of 50 yards in the first quarter. Bucs running back Terrence Wilson had 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Christian Reid made his first start and was 8 of 21 for 92 yards and ran for 36 yards.

The Bucs (4-5) are at Campbell for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday before ending the regular season at The Citadel on Thursday, Nov. 29.
