Sophia White and her father Jessy White celebrate the Month of the Military Child with Marrington Elementary School students staff.

To celebrate April as the official Month of the Military Child students and staff at Marrington Elementary School wore purple in support of military children everywhere, where the majority of the students that attend are from military families.

On April 26, to celebrate the sacrifices military children, a school program included a visit from service dogs, Tucker, Griffin and Ben along with their handlers who dedicated a performance to military children.

The service/therapy dogs have been frequent visitors at Marrington this year, trotting into school bringing smiles to students and teachers alike.

A special banner celebrating military kids was presented by military children and their friends. Three students, Ashley Carr, Sophia White and MacKenzie Johnson all read original poems about their experiences as military children.

Additionally, Marrington’s Kids on Course Golf Team was presented with new golf clubs for achievement as the Grand Prize Winners of The Champions Cup, hosted by the First Tee of Greater Charleston.

Earlier in April, eight students, led by coaches Brandon Voss, Jasmine Saab and Justin Lowe traveled to Wescott Plantation Golf Club to participate in the tournament.

The golfers traveled around nine stations, completing core value challenges, as well as golf skill challenges and walked away as champions of the competition.

This was the first time in the history of the tournament that a school has won two years in a row.

Members of the team were NaShae Long, Serenity Thiemann, Kasyn Boatner, Caroline Lammy, Blake Johnson, Griffin Berg, Kai Layton and Armyoh Marsh.
