Hanahan wrestling team granted injunction; Hearing set for Thursday

Lawyers for Berkeley County School District have filed an injunction to delay the upcoming Class AA state championship wrestling match between Loris and Woodruff.

It was postponed to at least early next week because of inclement weather anyway but now will not happen until Friday or Saturday at the earliest.

A hearing will be held Thursday at 1 in front of a Moncks Corner judge to determine whether or not Hanahan High School will be able to have an appeal heard by the South Carolina High School League's Executive Committee.

A SCHSL ruling Thursday stripped Hanahan of the Lower State title and gave it to Loris. Hanahan's Koffi Dwira wrestled at 125 pounds, recording a victory for the Hawks Wednesday night, but could have been in violation of weight management rule according to Loris and Hanahan was made to forfeit Dwira's victory by SCHSL Executive Director Jerome Singleton.

Loris was awarded six points, the same amount as a forfeit at the weight class, and the Hawks lost the three points Dwira got for them after besting Jamar Gore 12-5.  Rather than Hanahan winning 34-33, Loris was credited with a 39-31 victory and penciled in to face Woodruff for the title.

However, the validity of the rule has been brought into question by Hanahan and the Hawks are aiming to have an appeal heard by the executive committee.

“The rule is unavailable,” Adkins said. “They’re saying I’m responsible for an email they may have sent (in 2006). They said it was on email or it was covered in a meeting.”

Adkins also said Dwira has been certified to wrestle at 125 pounds, and no lower, on the optimal performance calculator program through the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Dwira wrestled in the 140-pound weight class this season but was wrestling up at the time and his weight loss to 126.8 pounds for the Loris match was well within weight management guidelines.

Before wrestling at 125 in the Lower State finals, Dwira had been mostly wrestling at 130 pounds.

Citing a state assocation's addendum to a national federation rule, Loris claims Dwira was not allowed to wrestle three weight classes below a previous competition weight class during that same season.

The championship match will be held at a neutral site once the appeals process takes its course.
