Wando started out strong but the Summerville lightweights ran the board to lead the Green Wave grapplers to victory Wednesday.
The wrestling started in the 140-pound weight class and the Warriors won three of the first five matches. Despite a pair of Summerville pins in the upper weight classes, Wando was still in good shape after the 285-pound match. However, the Wave took charge beginning with the 103-pound match and clinched the victory by taking six straight classes.
“We are pretty strong in our lower weights but we didn’t wrestle as strong as I thought we could,” Summerville coach Daryl Tucker said. “We lost a match we should have won, but we just have to learn from those things.”
Earning a win by pin for Summerville were Andrew Hayes in the 145-pound class, Steven Windham (152), Marcus Ambrose (189), Dajon Weston (215), Corey Hall (103), Jordan Wigger (112), Joseph Thomas (119) and Eli Ashby (135). Bobby Hunter earned a 9-1 decision at 130 and Aaron Hansen won by forfeit at 125.
Summerville improved its duals record to 9-1 with the win. The team’s only loss is to Rock Hill. Tucker is pleased with the team’s progress.
“We’ve been meeting our goals,” he said. “We placed Top 5 at the Tiger Classic and made the finals for the Lexington Duals. We are closing the gap and seeing progress every week.”
Summerville is currently ranked fifth in the Coaches Association 4-A poll.
