The Green Wave wrestling team opened its season on a good note Monday, earning a 50-25 win over Goose Creek.
Summerville won nine of 14 weight classes. Joe Thomas (119-pound class), Bobby Hunter (130), Eli Ashby (135), Steven Windham (152) and Jordan Wigger (112) earned their matches by pin and Aaron Hanson (125) won by technical fall. Ashby’s pin came in the first period and the other pins came in the second.
“I think this is a good start and we will get better as long as we keep working hard,” Hanson, one of the team’s captains, said. “We’re just going to take things one match at a time and do what we can to represent Summerville right. We have a unified group this year. We are all friends and coach Darryl Tucker has us moving in the right direction.”
Earning wins by pin for Goose Creek were Chris Thompson (140) and John Stone (103).
The Gators forfeited the 215-pound and Heavyweight classes. Summerville forfeited the171-pound class.
The wrestling started at the 119-pound class. The Wave won the first four matches to gain considerable momentum. The Gators then earned victories in the next two classes. After that, it was a fairly even contest
