The Stratford boys cross country team has validated its spot in the Class AAAA top 10 and the Lady Knights have proven they belong there, too.

Both squads won their divisions last weekend in the Eye-Opener Invitational in Spartanburg. There were two divisions, the international and championship divisions.

“We went up there and decided we’d run the championship races,” Stratford coach Shane Sutherland said. “The girls were not ranked and we showed we could be a top five …

“The boys were ranked seventh going in but we have some brand new runners.”

The Lady Knights blasted second-place Riverside by 101 points, finishing with 41. Jasmine Polite (20:10) was second, followed by Danielle Sams in third. Kari Lavoie and Sarah Reeves were seventh and eighth. Danna Edu, Daisy Edu and Lauren Freeman also raced.

The boys finished with 63 points, 34 points ahead of runner up Riverside and well ahead of third-place Liberty. Steve Rivard (16:48) won the race for the Knights and Bobby O’Brien and Brandon Rabon were fourth and ninth, respectively.

Avery Oree, Sango Asante, Guy McCarter and Bobby Rhodus also ran.

“Steve put his race away at the 2-mile mark,” Sutherland said. “He had 50 meters on the second-place guy and Bobby and Brandon came in with that lead pack.”

In all, 11 of the 14 Stratford runners ran their personal bests at the event.

“If you plugged in our numbers with the other race, the girls would have been a solid fifth and the boys a solid third,” Sutherland said.

The Stratford teams will race in the international division this weekend in the Coaches Classic in Columbia.
