Fort Dorchester, the top ranked AAAA team in the South Carolina coaches’ poll released Jan. 6, went 1-2 in the tournament. However, the Patriots faced some quality opponents so the experienced they gained could help the team out down the road.
The Patriots lost matches to Virginia’s Cox High School, which placed fourth in the National High School division, and South Plainfield High out of New Jersey, which placed third in the division.
Cox defeated the Patriots 40-24 and South Plainfeld earned a 34-29 victory over the Fort. The Patriots did beat New Jersey’s Camden Catholic by a 43-23 margin.
Ashley Bracklein and Seiji Borja won all three of their individual matches. Bracklein earned a 7-3 decision over Cox wrestler Dalton Davidson, a 4-2 decision over Camden Catholic wrestler Kevin Walker and a 13-5 major decision over South Plainfield’s Corey Strasenko. All the wins were in the 140-pound weight class.
Borja earned an 11-0 major decision at 152 over South Plainfield’s Kyle Pompilio and a win by injury at 152 against Cox High. He also earned a 3-1 decision in the 160-pound match against Camden Catholic’s Justin Danfield.
Picking up two wins each for the Fort were Daquan Wilson (135-pound class), Michael Young (145), Evan Thompson (171), Keyshon Flores (189), Geno Porter (215) and Michael Sellars (285). Young’s only loss was a 7-5 decision he dropped to Cox’s Ben Dorsay, who is ranked as the nation’s third best wrestler in the 145-pound class by Intermat.
