Fort Dorchester’s Michael Young prepares to put his opponent on the mat Tuesday.
The Fort Dorchester wrestling team seems to be on track to be a contender again this season.

The Patriots already have a pair of tournament wins under their belt this season and on Tuesday improved their duals record to 2-0. Fort Dorchester won the Palmetto Classic in early December and the Rebel Invitational Dec. 12. On Dec. 15, the Fort earned a 71-6 victory over Colleton County.

Returning state champion Seiji Borja has led the charge for the Patriots in the early part of the season. Borja won the 152-pound weight class at both tournaments and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Rebel Invitational. During the team’s last match, he earned a win by technical fall at 152.

Last season, Borja wrestled at 140, but he bulked up over the summer and is likely to continue to wrestle at either 152 or 145 this season.

“I thought jumping up to 152 was going to be a struggle but it’s going pretty good so far,” Borja said. “In the finals last weekend I went up against a guy from Georgia who is nationally ranked. The score was close, but I feel I controlled the entire match. I just go out and wrestle my match. It’s like coach says, if you wrestle as hard as you can, the winning will take care of itself.”

The Patriots won 13 of 14 classes against Colleton with 10 victories coming by pin. Colleton’s sole victory was a pin by Jacques Glover in the 103-pound class.

Borja is optimistic about the rest of the season.

“We’ve improved since our first match,” he said. “We are doing the right things, practicing hard and keeping the right attitude so I like our chances.”
