Former Stratford and Winthrop catcher John Murrian was a recent participant in the New York-Penn League all-star game played at Penn State Aug. 18.

Murrian, one of the top hitters in the league for the Oneonta Tigers, was 0-for-3 in the game but the American League won the game 4-2.

Murrian, who led the league in hitting earlier this month, is batting .318 with 15 doubles, four home runs and 35 RBIs.

He was a ninth-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in the spring.

Also, former Knight pitcher Matt Crim became the first Appalachian League pitcher to win 10 games in a season since 1997. He worked six innings and surrendered just three hits to help the Danville Braves win 4-1 over Greeneville Friday night.

He walked one and struck out four. In his next start – likely this Wednesday or Thursday – he will look to pull off a rarity. The last Appy League pitcher to reach 11 wins is Clint Thomas, who did it for Bluefield in 1976.

Crim is 10-0 with a 2.61 earned-run average. He’s tossed 62 innings. He’s allowed 62 hits, struck out 45 batters and surrendered eight walks.

The Braves (42-17) have already clinched the Appalachian League East pennant for the fifth time in six years.
