Two-sport Goose Creek High School standout Zach Lavery has signed a letter of intent to further his baseball career at The Citadel.
Lavery, who recently finished second in receiving for the Gators’ state championship football team, is one of the school’s best baseball players ever.
He’s a three-year starter for the baseball team as a pitcher and outfielder and holds the school’s single season record for strikeouts. He also holds the GCHS career record for K’s from the mound, and needs one more victory this season to set the school’s career record for victories.
Lavery is a two-time all-region selection and was all-state by the High School Sports Report in 2010.
“Zach has been a member of our program for six years,” Goose Creek coach Scott Durham said. “We knew early on that he was going to be a special player. He has worked extremely hard to become a great player. He has been our top pitcher and a middle-of-the order hitter since his freshman year.
“We look forward to him having a great senior season. The Citadel is getting a great player.”
This past summer, Lavery was a member of the Post 166 American Legion baseball team that made it to the state tournament. Lavery was 7-1 from the mound and was among a group that batted over .300.
Last spring for the Gators, he recorded four of the team’s seven wins and fashioned a 3.04 earned-run average. He also batted .299 and led the team in stolen bases, walks and home runs.
