The Stratford girls tennis team is entering the home stretch of the regular season and they’re aiming for the Class AAAA playoffs.

Stratford is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAA play.

“We’re looking to capitalize on the wins we have and we’re trying to apply that in some region matches,” Lady Knights coach David Poole said. “Our region opponents are tough.”

SHS fell to Berkeley 5-3 last Thursday and were supposed to play James Island in a makeup match Monday.

“We’ve got to continue to work hard in practice to improve a little bit and have some confidence when we’re playing out there,” Poole said.

The team’s No. 1 player is junior Megan Rodgers, a third-year player for the Lady Knights. The No. 2 singles player is junior Kristen Duchaine. The other top three singles players are Lindsey Brandon, Mandita Karambelkar and Katie Brandon.

Rhonda Carman, Katherine Smith and Courtney Smith primarily play at No. 2 doubles for the Lady Knights.

If Stratford finishes fourth in region play, it will have to have beaten the No. 4 team from Region 8 to earn a spot in the playoffs, which begin later this month.

The team looks to be in good shape as far as that’s concerned since its three wins came against West Ashley, Colleton County and Fort Dorchester.

A year ago the Lady Knights made playoffs before losing to Region 6 champion West Florence.
