But the effort has to be there on a daily basis.
“The more excuses we come up with, the less likely we’re gonna be able to meet our potential at being the best team we can be,” said Adkins, whose team made it to the third round before losing to eventual state champ Loris last season. “Those little things add up. We need 100 percent commitment to meet 100 percent potential, and the potential is a state championship.”
The Hawks enter the season ranked ninth in the Class AA poll by scmat.com. They return four wrestlers that were individual state qualifiers last season.
Senior Michael Wolfe was third at 130 pounds and senior Koffi Dwira was fourth at 135 pounds. They come back at those weight classes this season.
Junior Cody Hancock was a qualifier at 119 pounds and junior Francis Boykin qualified for state at 125 pounds. Hancock has moved up to 125 pounds and Boykin is slated to grapple at 140.
Two newcomers, J.J. Johnson and Jeff Brule, take over at 103 and 112.
Johnson was second in middle school state last year at 87 pounds and Brule was a middle school state qualifier at 110 pounds.
Freshman Brian Joseph or Bryce Ellis are the 119 pounders. Varsity returners Caleb Harvey and Fabian Gayton are interchangeable at 145 and 152 pounds.
The lone open weight class is 160 pounds but Adkins said there are a number of young guys he could put there.
Charlie Boykin (171), Nick Thompson (189, 215) and Trey Farley (heavyweight) are also returning starters in the lineup. C.J. Christy (heavyweight) and Joseph Clement (189) are key contributors at the top part of the lineup.
