Goose Creek’s basketball teams swept the season series with rival Stratford on Friday at GCHS, coasting to victories in each game.

The Lady Gators downed Stratford 47-18, followed by the Gators’ 63-45 victory in the boys’ game.

“We knew if we didn’t have high intensity, they’d be able to give us a run for our money,” said Goose Creek forward DeShawn Evans, who led the Gators with a season-high 19 points. “We came out here, worked as a team and didn’t get full of ourselves.

“We kept the momentum going.”

The Gators (16-4, 3-2 Region 7-AAAA) trailed after a quarter and were behind 23-21 with just over three minutes left in the first half before going on an 11-2 run to end the second quarter.

Goose Creek later outscored the Knights 14-4 in the third quarter to comfortably lead 46-29 heading into the final period.

“Once we started going full court, they started not being able to handle some of the pressure,” Goose Creek boys coach Bruce Walls said. “We were able to get some turnovers and we made a really good push.”

Troy Tucker added 17 points for Goose Creek and Dantez Bennamon chipped in 13 points.

Chase Tidwell led Stratford with 10 points, while Markel Epps, Demetre Rivers and Shomair Tate each had seven points. The Knights, who were set to host Wando on Tuesday, remained winless in region play.

The Gators host West Ashley on Friday. They received a rare night off on Tuesday.

“It’s going to give us a chance to get our legs back,” Walls said. “I’m sure we’ll be ready to play (the Wildcats). It’s a huge game as far as what’s at stake.”

The game will be for second place in the region. West Ashley edged Goose Creek 51-50 on a last-second shot on Jan. 17.

The Lady Gators (18-4, 5-0 Region 7-AAAA) jumped on Stratford early and were never seriously challenged.

“I thought we came out with a lot of intensity in the first quarter,” Lady Gators coach Tim Baldwin said. “We got out big. Definitely with our press we got some easy buckets.”

Ashley Fields had 18 points and N’Dea Bryant chipped in 14 points for the Lady Gators. Brendysha Liner added seven points.

Tiffany Addison had seven points and Caroline Gilbert six points for the Lady Knights, who remained winless in the region.

A win Friday against West Ashley would lock up a first-place finish in the region and a top seed for the playoffs, which begin later this month.

The Lady Gators defeated West Ashley 46-29 on Jan. 17.
