Gators fall in Summerville

Summerville took the lead in the race for Lowcountry football supremacy Friday, earning a 28–17 win over Goose Creek.
The Gators (1-1) looked like they were going to stomp Summerville (2-0) early in the game. Had it not been for a 40-yard loss on a high punt snap that resulted in a Green Wave safety, the Gators would have nearly doubled Summerville’s total offense in the first two quarters. Had a 35-yard field goal attempt not sailed wide, the Gators would have taken a lead into the half.
But as things stood, Summerville took an 8-7 lead into the locker room. The Green Wave then came out and played better the final two quarters.
“We didn’t do a good job throwing to some open receivers,” Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said. “Then we put a snap over the punters head. Then we missed a tackle and gave up a long run. You can’t give up those big plays and we didn’t run the ball as well as we need to. We’ll get back to running the football, but tonight I think we were out coached and out played.”
Goose Creek went 80 yards on its first possession to score, taking 7:36 off the play clock in the process. Tailback Ranoy Hines capped the drive with a 4-yard run into the end zone and Daniel Smith hit the PAT.
Summerville caught a break just before the half. A penalty backed the Gators up to the 45-yard line and forced a punt. The snap sailed over the punters head so he kicked it out of the end zone for a safety.
On the first play after the free kick, Wave QB Dalton Saunders hit Chris Williams with a pass on the outside. With one move, Williams was past the Gator defensive back and off to the races for a 61-yard touchdown. Summerville went for the two-point conversion, but a Saunders’ pass was high, leaving the Wave with an 8-7 lead.
Summerville scored on its first possession of the second half. Cody Reese ran for 24 yards on a reverse to get thigs going. Two plays later, De’Angelo Henderson took a pitch and ran 55 yards into the end zone. Michael Scholz’s PAT took the score to 15-7.
The Gators answered on their next drive with big runs from Hines and fullback Virgil Smalls. On a first down, Hines found a hole and followed his blockers up field for a 41-yard gain. Then Smalls ran through a crowd to cap the drive with a 4-yard TD. Hines added the two-point conversion, sweeping right and then diving into the end zone for a 15-15 score.
Summerville drove 49 yard to score with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter. Henderson moved the ball into the red zone with a few nice runs and then Saunders connected with Williams on a 4-yard TD pass. Gator defensive back Albert Kirk blocked the PAT attempt.
Goose Creek drove 70 yards on its ensuing possession, but needed 80. The Gators had a first-and-goal at the 8, but Summerville made a stand and took over on downs.
The Gator defense stood strong and forced Saunders to scramble on third down. As the QB drifted back, the pressure intensified until he found himself in the end zone. Saunders tossed a desperation throw to avoid the sac and was calle for intentional grouding. Since he was in the end zone, it resulted in a Gator safety and a 21-17 score with 4:54 remaining in game.
The Summerville defense held again and then Saunders hit a wide open Nigel Frierson with a 62-yard scoring strike with 2:55 remaining.
Hines led all rushers with 151 yards on the ground. Gator QB Zach Lavery completed 10-of-24 pass attempts for 109 yards. Glears had six receptions for 73 yards.
Henderson had 118 rushing yards. Saunders completed 6-of-12 pass attempts for 147 yards and three TDs. Williams led all receivers with 77 yards and two TDs.

Hey Summerville: keep being cocky and arrogant. Because we're going to make the playoffs and the next time we meet we're going to show you humility when we kick your butt and send McKittrick to the retirement home.
