Of the dozen Gazette-area high school wrestlers involved in the individual state championships this past weekend at Rock Hill High School, five finished either second or third in their respective weight classes.

In each weight class, four each from the Upper State and Lower State vied for the titles.

While there were no state champs among the group, Hanahan’s J.J. Johnson and Goose Creek’s Jawaun Foreman made the finals before losing. Johnson was second at 103 pounds in Class A-AA and Foreman was runner-up at 152 pounds in Class AAAA.

Johnson, a freshman, lost to Woodruff senior Aikerrian Gilliam 15-1 in the championship match. Gilliam is a two-time state champion.

Foreman, a senior, dropped a 7-1 decision to senior Seiji Borja of Fort Dorchester, now a three-time state champion.

Hanahan’s Francis Boykin (135) and Cody Hancock (140) posted third-place finishes along with Stratford’s Austin Koile, who wrestled in the 160-pound class.

Hanahan’s Dennis Flores (152) and Michael Wolfe (125), and Goose Creek’s Tevin Davis (189) and Shawn Williams (heavyweight) were fifth in their weight classes.

Stratford’s Nicholas Young (103) and Joseph Vasquez (119) along with Cane Bay’s Tariq Simmons (160) also competed in the state championships.
