He began his professional debut Sunday with the Gateway Grizzlies in Sauget, Ill.
“That’s great news,” Stratford coach John Chalus said. “He was a great player for us and I’m glad to hear that about him. It gives him an opportunity to showcase himself and he deserves it.”
After leaving Stratford, Meade (6-5, 220) became one of the best players in The Citadel’s baseball history.
Meade, an all-Southern Conference pick, batted .397 with five home runs and 67 RBIs for the Bulldogs in 2009. During his four-year collegiate career he led The Citadel to two Southern Conference Tournament championship games.
He became the fifth Bulldog this year to enter the professional ranks. The Grizzlies list him as an infielder.
He went 1 for 4 in his professional debut for the Grizzlies (13-21) in front of almost 3,600 fans.
Crim winning pitcher in pro debut
Matt Crim, another former Stratford and Citadel standout, made his professional debut Friday, throwing 4.2 innings of relief to earn the win for the Danville (Va.) Braves in a 9-3 victory over the Greeneville Astros.
He struck out four and allowed a run on three hits as the Braves improved to 4-0 on the young season.
“Matt has done a tremendous job as far as fighting and battling for what he’s gotten,” Chalus said. “He was always a ’tweener but he’s shown that he can step it up.”
He was a 21st round pick by the Atlanta Braves in the last MLB draft.
Wieters hits second home run of season
Among Matt Wieters’ recent hits was his second home run of the season for the Baltimore Orioles.
The former Stratford and Georgia Tech catcher blasted a solo homer on June 23 against the Florida Marlins. He’s driven in six runs since being called up and scored eight runs.
He had his batting average up to .262 but was down to .234 going into Monday’s series opener against the Boston Red Sox. The Orioles (34-41) begin a series at Anaheim Thursday.
