Cane Bay middle linebacker Cullen Seabrook was one of the top tacklers in the area last fall, finishing with 101 stops to lead the Cobras’ defense.
If there is one glowing compliment a coach can give a defensive player, it’s to say that player’s motor never stops running.

With that as one of his first thoughts, a conversation with Cane Bay defensive coordinator Russell Zehr quickly turns complimentary when talking about junior linebacker Cullen Seabrook.

“The biggest thing about him is that he’ll stick his nose in there on the trap and iso or get out there and make the tackle on a sweep,” Zehr said. “He never gives up.”

A year ago, Seabrook led the first-year Cobras in tackles with 101 and came up with the school’s first interception in the first game of the season.

And while the scoreboard was often unkind to the Cobras in their inaugural season – they finished 2-8 - Seabrook stuck with it always. He was named to The Gazette’s second-team All-County Line team, a group of Berkeley County and Dorchester County all-stars.

“It didn’t matter if the score was 40-0, he gave you everything he had,” Zehr said. “He isn’t going to back down. Other kids (his Cane Bay teammates) know that they have to go at him hard or they may get hurt.”

He’s carried that passion for the game into summer workouts and is very dedicated to getting bigger, stronger and faster, Zehr said.

“He’s a real dependable kid,” he added. “Every day we’re open, he’s up there.”

He’s made significant gains in speed and quickness during the offseason, too.

“He’s a lot quicker,” Zehr said. “He’ll be able to get where he needs to go as the middle linebacker. He’s going to play from sideline to sideline.”

The Cobras didn’t have team captains last season but probably will this year. Seabrook is one of the players at the top of the list for consideration.

“He doesn’t do a lot of talking,” Zehr said.  “He lets his actions speak for themselves. He’s really worked hard.”

The Cobras, along with other public schools, will begin practice July 31.
