Cane Bay was within 14-9 before Timberland scored 30 unanswered points in the second half. While it was a rout, it was a lot more competitive than last season’s 68-0 loss.
“They’re a year stronger and a year older and all their starters came back,” Timberland coach Art Craig said of the Cobras. “With the staff they have, you expect them to be better and they were. I told (Cane Bay coach) Jeff Cruce, ‘Wow, what a difference a year makes.’ They’ll do well in their region this year.”
The Wolves quickly jumped on Cane Bay 14-0 in the first six minutes of the game but the Cobras refused to fold, cutting into their deficit on Zach Wimmer’s 23-yard TD pass to Xavier Moultrie with 4:12 left in the opening quarter.
Wimmer’s 38-yard field goal made it 14-9 less than a minute into the second quarter and the Cobras had a couple decent opportunities in the first half to take the lead.
The second half was all Timberland, though.
Cane Bay (1-2) is back in action Friday at Kingstree, where it looks to avenge last fall’s 64-0 loss at the hands of the Jaguars. Kingstree (1-2) is coming off a 48-0 loss to Lake City.
Cruce has reminded his team each week how teams ran it up on them last fall in their first season. This is another opportunity to prove how far they’ve come.
Against Timberland, the Cobras had 241 yards of total offense. Wimmer was 3 of 5 for 72 yards and Brandon Hall was 6 of 16 for 76 yards.
Combined, they are 19 for 50 for 315 yards with two TDs and two interceptions on the year.
Fritz Simmons was the leading rusher with 64 yards, while Anthony Enos added 27 yards on seven carries. On the season, Enos and Simmons have almost identical numbers, combining for 276 yards on 60 carries.
Moultrie had six catches for 93 yards. Nigel Britt had two catches for 31 yards.
Defensive lineman Cody Rose, linebacker Darius Warren and defensive lineman Devonte Diggs are the leading tacklers on that side of the ball.
