BHS wrestler Buddy Cumbee went 5-0 in the Stratford Duals at 103 pounds.
For Berkeley wrestling coach Tim Wash, Christmas came a couple days early this year.

His Stags wrestling team finished second in the Stratford duals, narrowly losing out 42-33 to champion Battery Creek. Wash said the second place finish was well earned.

“These guys battled hard all day,” Wash said. “They were in a war.”

The Stags pulled out some big matches in the daylong duals on Tuesday and came within one match from emerging Kings of the Hill.

“We beat Stratford for second place, and Battery Creek beat Stratford, but then Battery Creek beat us,” Wash said. “It was a very close meet.”

In the championship match Berkeley jumped out to its usual fast start in the lower weight classes with wins by Buddy Cumbee, Richard Patterson, Patrick Mestrez and Christian Kilpatrick.

“Deiondre Robinson had a great day wrestling even though he lost in the finals,” Wash said. “He went 4-1 on the day, and has really stepped it up and gone to war.

“Buddy Cumbee had a great day wresting with five wins and has been consistent all year.”

The leader in the early going clearly is Mestrez, who is 16 for 16 in match wins, all coming in pins. “Patrick is solid and steady and one of the best wrestlers in the state,” Wash said.

The big surprise for Wash and his program is the emergence of Richard Patterson as a dominant wrestler. Patterson, a first year wrestler, struggled in the season’s early matches but perhaps came of age in the Stratford Duals.

“This is Richard’s first year wrestling,” Wash said. “He is a remarkable athlete and what he did early was purely because of his athleticism. Now he’s learning the sport and wrestling technique and it’s beginning to show on the mat.”

Patterson was 5-0 on Tuesday with a pin in the championship match.

The Stags continue to struggle in the upper weight classes, losing Robbie Williams with an injured shoulder and with football players making the transition to wrestling.

“It was a long football season,” Wash said. “These kids need a break, but it’s a long wrestling season, too.”

The Stags were to take the rest of the week off for Christmas and be back at it hard at 9 a.m. on Dec. 29.
