For five Northwood Academy senior basketball players, this is it.
The Lady Chargers (21-5) are again in the running for a SCISA Class AAA crown after two straight runner-up finishes.
“It’s a group who has been there before,” Northwood coach Presley Singleton said. “… I think they’re hungrier than ever to finish the deal. They’ve worked so hard, all of them. We don’t want to fall short this time.”
Singleton’s team was set to begin the tournament in Sumter on Tuesday against Augusta Christian. Friday’s semifinal game would be against either Cardinal Newman or Orangeburg Prep and the final is Saturday.
“I do feel like we’ve played a tougher schedule than we did last year,” Singleton said. “We’re used to battling and playing teams that are bigger than us. We’ve done that a lot this year. That’s why I scheduled some tougher competition before region play, to get us where we’re ready.”
The Lady Chargers’ five seniors are point guard Meaggan Thomas, wing Emily Hoisington, wing Danel Phillips, guard Jasmine Phillips and guard Sam Chubb, who is out for the year with an ankle injury.
It’s a group that’s made its mark with a consistent level of play on both ends of the floor. Thomas and Hoisington lead the team in assists and Butler is one of the team’s quickest guards. She’s fourth in scoring at 5.3 points per game this season but was second on the squad a year ago.
Phillips draws the toughest defensive assignment every game, whether it’s a guard or post player she has to guard.
The Lady Chargers’ younger players provide the primary punch.
Sophomore Amber Campbell, who has drawn attention from ACC and SEC schools, leads in scoring at 27 points per game and steals with 5.3 per game. Junior forward Alyssa Kinsey is the top rebounder at 9.3 boards a contest.
Kinsey is the team’s second leading scorer at 12.2 PPG, followed by sophomore guard Jaime Andrews (6.1 PPG) and Butler.
Sophomore wing Antoinette Davis contributes 5.2 points and 6.4 boards a contest.
