Home victories and region championships continue to pile up for Goose Creek’s girls basketball team.

The Lady Gators made it five straight region crowns by beating West Ashley 42-22 on Friday night. They’ve won seven region titles in 11 seasons under coach Tim Baldwin.

“It’s a whole team thing,” junior Ashley Fields said. “We try to stick together and work hard each day. We motivate each other in practice. If something’s not going right, we just tell them ‘hey, pick it up.”’

Goose Creek was never seriously challenged after jumping out to a 24-7 lead in the second quarter. The Lady Gators improved to 19-4, including a 6-0 mark against region foes.

“From one to eight or nine, we played solid all game long,” Baldwin said. “… We really set the tempo early on and kept it all the way through.”

Brittani Doctor led the Lady Gators with 12 points, while Fields added nine points. N’Dea Bryant chipped in seven points. Fields also had seven rebounds and three steals.

Bryant made three blocks, three steals and five assists.

Dekeiya Cohen had 13 to lead West Ashley.

Baldwin’s team has not lost at home since 2008.

“We believe in carrying the torch and passing it down to the next group,” Baldwin said. “… When you put banners on the wall, it passes the tradition down to the kids coming behind you. It puts that taste in their mouth and they want to do the same thing. Expectations are going to be high every year.”

The Lady Gators will host James Island on Feb. 7 before closing out the regular season Feb. 10 at Wando.

They will begin the Class AAAA playoffs Feb. 14 at home against the fifth-place team from Region 4-AAAA.
