The Cane Bay wrestling team is getting healthy at just the right time of the season.
The Cobras, with a strong lineup from top to bottom, captured the crown in the annual Hawk Invitational wrestling tournament at HHS on Saturday.
“This is probably the best lineup we’ve put on the mat this year,” Cane Bay coach Tim Wash said. “We’ve had some people out. It’s always good to be healthy in January.”
The Cobras won two weight classes, finished runner-up in two other classes and finished with 171.50 points, just ahead of Goose Creek (169) and Edisto (166.5). The host Hawks were fourth with 142 points.
“Everybody contributed. Everybody scored,” Wash said. “I told them at the beginning of the day that if everybody won at least two matches, we’d have a chance to win it. All the kids work very hard and I’m proud to be associated with them.”
Albert Ednilao was the 108-pound champion for the Cobras and Matt Rudy won at 184 pounds. Ednilao was named most outstanding wrestler for the lighter weight classes.
He pinned all of his first three opponents, then won 4-3 in the final, avenging a loss earlier this season to Goose Creek.
“Albert has improved a lot and hopefully he’ll continue to improve,” Wash said.
Rudy recorded falls in his first three matches and won 3-1 in the final over Edisto.
“Matt is always strong,” Wash said.
Tillman Reeves was second at 140 and Jeff Zech was runner-up at 154.
Now the Cobras turn their focus to region competition. They have region rivals Hilton Head, Battery Creek and Bluffton ahead on the schedule.
“Our No. 1 goal is to work hard every day to get better so we can win the region,” Wash said. “That way we would get some home playoff matches… This is a big step in the right direction. This is the first big tournament this team has won.”
Other winners on Saturday were Wando’s Dakota Dahabi (115), Hanahan’s J.J. Johnson (122), Ashley Ridge’s Zane Graham (128), Edisto’s Xavier Johnson (134), Socastee’s T.J. Lazaroff, Hanahan’s Bryce Ellis (147), Edisto’s Jabarri Williams, Hanahan’s Dennis Flores, Ashley Ridge’s Xavier Sierra (172), Goose Creek’s Trevon Bennett (197), Goose Creek’s Davon Mitchell and Socastee’s Craig Burton (287).
Sierra was the most outstanding wrestler in the heavier weight classes, recording pins in all of his matches.
