Born July 9, 1922, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Harry L. Smith and Orpha Hile.
Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Army as an infantry officer. He served in World War II, the Korean conflict, and two tours in Vietnam. He had numerous tours of duty in Germany, and the United States. After 33 years of active military duty, he retired in July 1971, and was employed as a JROTC instructor at Goose Creek High School for 18 years retiring in 1989.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ina.
Also surviving are three daughters, Brenda McMillian of Fort Collins, CO, Cynthia (Tim) Morris of St. Leonard, Md., and Jennifer (Harvey) Becker of Goose Creek; five sons, Joesph (P.J.) Smith of Apopka, FL, Harry Lee Smith III of Gaston, Jeffrey (Felicia) Smith of Pensacola, FL, Marc Smith of Leesburg, Va., and Chris (Jessie) Smith of Cosby, TN; a sister, Edith Beish of Ashland, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Orpha Smith; two sisters, Mildred and Judy; and a brother, Billy.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Smith on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Goose Creek High School Auditorium.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charleston Cancer Center.
