As the search for an escaped inmate continues this week, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has announced the termination of one employee, the demotion of another, and the suspension of two others in the wake of the escape.
James Sanders, who slipped out of the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner on Jan. 26, remains at large Monday, five days after he was spotted in the Sangaree area but avoided capture.
On Monday, the BCSO released a statement concerning the escape:
“The safety of Berkeley County citizens are of the utmost concern to the Sheriff's Office and the detention center. To ensure that safety, we took immediate action as necessary. After an investigation and thorough review, one employee was terminated, one was demoted, and two were suspended, all for failing to follow procedures.”
Names and positions of the terminated employees have not been released.
Sanders, 39, a white male who stands 5'7" and has dark hair, is considered dangerous. He already faced prison time for criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, when he appeared before a judge on Jan. 26 and received time served for violating a restraining order.
"We're still searching for him," BCSO spokesman Dan Moon said Monday.
Anyone with information regarding Sanders’ location is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (843) 719-4412, or simply call 911.
