According to Campbell, the arctic species usually winters in Mexico. He speculates that the Greater White-Fronted Goose got lost and found other geese with whom to spend the winter.
Three of this species have been seen in North Carolina; but this one bird on campus is the only report that Campbell has seen for South Carolina this winter.
This species is usually found along the southern part of the Mississippi River or farther west for the winter.
