The Town of Moncks Corner is asking residents, business owners, students and anyone willing to help to submit a recommendation to Google or YouTube video nominating the town as a test site for Google’s new ultra high speed network.
Videos and nominations are due no later than March 26th. Create and Post your YouTube Video nominating the City at the following link: http://www.makeitmonckscorner.com and be sure to include the URL link to your YouTube video in the nomination information if you have one.
Moncks Corner is one of the smallest towns in the U.S. pursuing an opportunity to become a test site for a new ultra high-speed broadband network that could potentially deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today and citizens will play a critical role in the effort.
Google is planning to launch an experiment to provide fiber to the home network capabilities and is asking municipalities and residents to provide information that will help the company determine where to build its network.
What this opportunity can do for Moncks Corner:
Bring national attention and media focus to our great community
Propel the Greater Moncks Corner area’s economic development
Moncks Corner’s ultra-fast broadband network would define us as a technology leader
Why Google should select Moncks Corner:
We have willing participation of our rural local exchange company
Our proximity to the existing Google data center will minimize transport cost and maximize the value of the local data center
Our superior geological condition has the perfect terrain for buried projects
Our climate is such that year round construction is possible
Our existing rural education and medical complexes offers the ability to demonstrate what ultra fast connections can do for rural health care
Perhaps the most unique and certainly most important benefit the town of Moncks Corner brings to the table is the willingness of our incumbent local exchange carrier to partner with Google. Our local phone company, Home Telephone Company, Inc., has been providing quality telecommunication service to our town for over 100 years. They have been a natural leader in deploying fiber to the home technology and have an extensive fiber network already deployed with local fiber technicians and maintenance crews on call 24/7. Their existing customer base, back office support and management systems are in place and ready to access. Home’s existing right of way, conduit, handholds, soft switches and associated electronics offers Google the ability to hit the ground running. The deployment of an ultra-fast high speed network can begin as soon as Google can develop the plans.
