GCPD to continue anti-drug education efforts

It looks like Safetypup will be staying in Goose Creek awhile.

Goose Creek Police Department Chief Harvey Becker recently announced that GCPD would continue its Safetypup Child Safety and Drug Education programs.

The program, created by the National Child Safety Council, is geared toward children in Kindergarten through sixth grade and is designed to give youngsters accurate and vital facts and information about drugs in a non-threatening way, Becker said. During the classroom visits and community events, the department will distribute more than 2,400 pieces of material.

“Other programs similar to the Safetypup program are available to our department.  However, I feel the council has the best materials available and the cost per child is the lowest we have found," Becker said.

The materials allow the children to learn safe living, while having fun with the games, pictures, puzzles, riddles, rhymes and songs.

"In the early drug education program, we teach the youngsters the importance of not putting anything into their bodies that could harm them,” Becker said. “The children also learn they are special and unique.

“No one looks, talks, walks, laughs, or cries just the way they do.  No one has the same smile, hair, eyes, or personality. No one will ever be just like you -- and being different is okay.”

In fact, the children learn to celebrate their differences, and learn how to make their own choices.

“We teach them how to make positive choices,” Becker said. “The consequence of a good choice is much different from those when we make a bad choice.”

The GCPD is currently mailing letters throughout the Goose Creek area to local business, industrial, and financial leaders. The program is also supported by local military and fraternal organizations.

“We appreciate the support our community leaders have given our program over the past years,” Becker said. “Without their much needed help, our program would not be successful. The contributions received reflect the sincere dedication to the safety of our youth.”

Anyone wishing to donate can make checks payable to the National Child Safety Council, C/O Goose Creek Police Department, PO Drawer 1768, Goose Creek, SC 29445-1768, attn: Chief Harvey Becker.

Contributions to the program stay within the Goose Creek area and are tax deductible. For more information call the GCPD at 863-5200.
