Over $4,000 in grants were awarded to Berkeley county teachers to foster environmental science.
Over $4,000 in grants were recently awarded directly to Berkeley County school teachers to be used to promote environmental education in the classroom.

The grants were awarded to the winners of the Berkeley Kids Who Care about the Environment project competition. There were a total of 90 projects submitted by a total of 227 teachers and 5,068 students.

Eighteen grants were awarded to 15 different Berkeley County schools. Teachers and students with winning projects received grants of up to $500 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third place. Additionally, four randomly drawn $100 awards were presented.

Kids Who Care holds the two-part competition each year in order to foster environmental education in Berkeley County. The second portion of the competition is Backyard Nature Scope – a two-day environmental education field day that will be held at Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner on March 24 and 25.

All students who take part in the project competition are eligible to participate in Nature Scope where they will be able to conduct hands-on environmental experiments as well as come face to face with a variety of local and exotic wildlife.
