The 20-year police veteran was shot on July 19, after arriving at an Iris Street residence in Goose Creek in response to a domestic disturbance call.
The shooting took place just after 8 p.m. July 19. Iris Street is located just off St. James Avenue in Goose Creek.
On June 25, the alleged shooter, Codrick Bass, 33, of Goose Creek, who was shot by police after firing at Edwards, was released from his own stay at MUSC.
Following an investigation of the shooting, Bass was charged with the following, according to the GCPD: One count of Unlawful Conduct toward a Child; one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree; one count of Lewd Act on Child Less than 16 Years of Age; one count of Malicious Injuries to Property/ Felony Greater than $2,000; one count of Criminal Domestic Violence High and Aggravated; two counts of Kidnapping; two counts of Discharging a Firearm into a Dwelling; four counts of Attempted Murder; six counts of a Possession of Firearm during Commission of Violent Crime.
A release earlier this week by Edwards’ family detailed the extent of his injuries.
The buckshot that was discharged from the suspect’s shotgun struck Edward’s body in nine different locations, including both arms, his right hand, right shoulder, face and the left side of his upper torso, which ultimately punctured his lung.
Edwards’ wife, Gretchen, released a statement addressing her husband’s condition.
She said that, while it has been reported in the media that her husband was not wearing a bulletproof vest when the incident occurred, “it has been determined that a vest would not have protected my husband from the most serious injury he sustained from the shooting.
“Therefore, our family is asking everyone to concentrate solely on my husband’s actions as a police officer serving his community and the recovery process he’s going through.”
She called the alleged deadly actions of Bass “cowardly.”
“The family has been truly humbled by the outpouring of support and concern that has come from so many in the Lowcountry,” she continued. “They ask everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and look forward to getting Officer Edwards back home.”
Edwards has been a GCPD officer for three years.
A fund to assist the Edwards family during this time of need has been established through the South Carolina Federal Credit Union.
