A sampling of nefarious doings obtained from Goose Creek Police Department and Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reports:
• In yet another online business transaction scam, a Goose Creek woman reported that she had been in contact via Yahoo Messenger with a man who is allegedly in London, England, intending to buy a car from him he had advertised on EBay. They agreed on a price of $2,960 to be transferred via Western Union to another man. She wired the funds and when she did not hear from either man about the transaction, she contacted EBay, the site from which they were allegedly doing business. EBay informed her that the transaction was a scam and that they had several similar incidents reported.
The woman tried to cancel the transaction but was informed that the money had been withdrawn in London.
• An officer on patrol responded to a call about shots being fired in the woods behind a home on Ryan Drive. The complainant told the officer several subjects were in the woods behind her house shooting firearms and that, in fact, people frequently were back there shooting firearms.
The officer walked into the backyard and saw no one in the nearby woods but did report hearing shots in the distance. Because the complainant’s property backs up to Wannamaker Park, which is not in Goose Creek, the officer asked dispatch to call the North Charleston Police Department to check on it.
NCPD responded later they had responded but had not seen any suspects in the area.
Meanwhile another individual said he could escort officers into the woods as he was familiar with the area and soon officers encountered several subjects, who had already placed their firearms on the ground. One of them explained they were just out practicing shooting; they were informed that they were trespassing and were escorted off the property. One of the subjects had an outstanding warrant against him by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and was taken into custody.
The case is being forward to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for follow up and charges are pending.
• A bank in Goose Creek reported that someone in a silver Pontiac with a paper tag was attempting to cash a fraudulent check. An officer responded to the call and while he was en route he received information that the vehicle had left the bank and was last seen driving into the Publix parking lot. The officer did not see the vehicle so he proceeded to the bank to meet with officials there.
The bank manager reported that a white female had come through the drive-through teller and provided a stolen Florida drivers license and Bank of America check card, as well as a check for $1,900. She had also done a similar transaction the day before and had successfully cashed a check for $1,900. However, the manager recognized her the second time and attempted to have employees stall her. The subject became anxious and left.
The suspect was described as a young white female with dark hair.
