Two men died in weekend traffic accidents in Berkeley County.

Both accidents, one near Cross and one in Moncks Corner, occurred Saturday, Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

According to Salisbury, Demond Johnson, 34, of Moncks Corner was riding his motorcycle near Moss Grove Drive and U.S. 52 Saturday afternoon when he hit a car; he was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina where he died at about 4:40 p.m. Sunday head injury sustained in that crash, Salisbury said. He was wearing a helmet, Salisbury said.

The Moncks Corner Police Department is investigating that accident, Salisbury said.

A second accident occurred on Mudville Road, near Cross, at about 9:21 p.m. Saturday, Salisbury said.

In that accident, 38-year-old John A. Capers of Summerville was driving a Mercedes when it left the roadway, struck a power pole, traveled about 100 yards more, then hit a tree, pinning Capers inside the vehicle. Capers was wearing a seatbelt, Salisbury said.

A passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt was thrown from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating that accident, Salisbury said.
