Accidents claim two county men

Two Berkeley County men lost their lives in recent traffic accidents, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office reported.

On March 14 at approximately 9:50 p.m., Calvin Washington, 59, was traveling on Cainhoy Road when his vehicle ran off the roadway and hit an embankment.

Washington was from the Wando community of Berkeley County. He was transported to East Cooper Hospital by Berkeley County EMS and was pronounced dead at the hospital.  

The accident is under investigation by Deputy Coroner George Oliver and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.  

Washington was ejected from the vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt.

On March 15 at approximately 2:55 a.m., Antonio Portillo, 17, of Moncks Corner was traveling on Old Whitesville Road when his sedan ran off the left side of the roadway and hit a power pole and then a tree.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury.  

According to the coroner, Portillo was not wearing a seatbelt. This accident is under investigation by the Coroner’s Office and the S.C. Highway Patrol.
