But that was it. The rest belonged to the usually-overmatched Waccamaw Warriors.
Despite racing out to a two-touchdown lead after just three offensive plays, Hanahan was dismantled 55-35 in its Region 7-AA opener Friday.
“I tried to tell our players that it wasn’t going to be easy,” Hanahan coach Charlie Patterson said. “When they caught back up with us, we didn’t respond very well.”
Tackling was poor and an array of small things – penalties, dropped balls and missed assignments – on offense stalled drives.
“It’s not that we’re lining up and they’re whipping us,” Patterson said. “We’re stopping ourselves.”
The Hawks rolled up over 500 yards of offense against the Warriors but couldn’t keep pace with Waccamaw in the second half, and the Warriors scored 27 of the games final 34 points.
Hanahan hosts Kingstree this week in a must-win game. It’s also homecoming.
“If we want to make the playoffs, we need to win this game,” Patterson said. “We’ve got to make some improvements in all areas. Defensively, we’ve got to tackle better. We had a punt blocked the other night so we’ve got to work on the kicking game. Offensively, we’ve got to stop the little things we’re doing that are stalling drives.”
Kingstree is coming off a 44-20 loss to Manning and brings a 3-3 record into the game.
The teams have one common opponent, Cane Bay. Hanahan blanked the Cobras 13-0 and Kingstree beat them 24-9.
“They’ve got a good quarterback (Renaldo Grate) and some good receivers,” Patterson said. “One of them is the state sprint champion in Class AA. They’ve got another receiver that’s a basketball player and high jumps for them. They played a lot of guys both ways but they seem to play hard the whole game.”
Hanahan won 39-6 a year ago.
In the Waccamaw game, backup quarterback Derek Coblentz went the whole way for starter Bryce Hines, who had a shoulder injury. He had a hand in all five scores. He rushed for 137 yards and scored twice on the ground and passed for 213 more yards and three touchdowns.
Two of this three touchdown passes went to sophomore Chris K. Brown, who finished with five catches for 52 yards. Irim Aiken had six catches for 118 yards and an 80-yarder for a score.
Running back Monti Richardson rushed for 133 yards.
Kicker Kevin Sandoval was perfect on all five extra points.
