Pirates have invaded Berkeley County this month.

With the Berkeley County Library beginning its annual Berkeley Reads in March, the library is celebrating pirates with three featured books for readers of all ages.

“I would like to thank you all for thank you all for recognizing the importance of reading and the importance of literacy,” Berkeley County Library director Donna Osborne told county council earlier this month. “This is our third year for Berkeley Reads. It is a partnership between the library, friends of the library and the county school district.”

The year’s books features something for all ages and includes “Edward and the Pirates” by David McPhail, an illustrated book for children ages 4-8, and “Peter and the Starcatchers” by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson for ages 10 and older.

The Berkeley Reads program encourages the community to read one or more of the books and to participate in special events and book discussions at the local libraries and schools. Community reading programs foster a love of reading and aid in the fight against illiteracy as people enjoy reading and talking about books together.

Berkeley County inaugurated its community reading program in 2008 with Marley and Me. Last year, the county read a variety of mystery stories, including The Hunt Club by local Charleston author Bret Lott.

The Friends of the Library will have copies of all three books available for sale at discounted prices at any Berkeley County Library branch. Copies of these books will also be available for checkout at all library branches.

The library will host a series of special events and book discussions surrounding the pirate theme this month.

More information is available from the Berkeley County Library website, www.berkeley.lib.sc.us.
