Weeks after city of Hanahan officials made public comments at the Berkeley County School District school board meeting, the district’s superintendent took the lectern to provide insight into the search for a suitable location for a proposed elementary school in the Tanner Plantation area.

During Tuesday’s regular board meeting, Rodney Thompson said the search for a viable location has been difficult. Most of the options have been dismissed due to wetland permitting, size and access. He said the district still plans on opening the school in fall 2015, on schedule, and that the school could be built in less than 14 months.

“I feel confident that we will find a piece of property that will work,” Thompson said.

Thompson said the district is in negotiations now for a site, but if it falls through he said there are some temporary, stopgap measures to help crowding in Hanahan Elementary, Goose Creek Primary, and Sedgefield Intermediate. Those measures would include building new wings.

“It’s not a desired option but we have it on the backburner,” Thompson said.

Zoning with the city of Hanahan caused the rift between the two public agencies when the district apparently did not follow through with for rezoning of a tract known as the Bowen site and the request was denied. Thompson said further property considerations would require zoning to be the seller’s responsibility.
