Lady Gators aiming to progress as season passes

Goose Creek High School volleyball coach Jay Watterworth admits inexperience is a major obstacle to overcome for his team this fall.

“We are semi-young and inexperienced this season,” he added. “We will need to play with passion and play with a high IQ to be successful.”

The roster contains three seniors, six juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. The major hole to fill from last year’s team is at setter, where Diemend Richardson was a 3-year starter. She was an all-star player and now plays for Grambling State. Richardson made 499 of Goose Creek’s 515 assists as a senior.

The Lady Gators began the season in a 6-2, playing two different setters in juniors Kali Berrigan and Savanna Taylor.

The primary targets of those assists will be sophomore Nailah Brown, sophomore Eternal Fuller and junior outside hitter Shakayia Wilson, who had 227 kills and 228 digs last season. Brown chipped in 87 kills.

Brown and Fuller both added over 100 digs in 2013.

Senior Angelica Mariano will lead the defense in the libero spot.

“We currently have a variety of girls fighting for two other prominent spots and it is a tough race right now,” Watterworth said.

That group is seniors Rivana James and Paige Markferding, juniors Abby Phillips, Anna Snyder and Alex Parker, sophomore Ericka Broughton and freshmen Cali White and Chloe Rice.

“We have to be a good serving team and we have to play better defense,” Watterworth said. “This is what we work on the most in practice. There will be plenty of key matchups this season and our region is tougher now that James Island has moved back to AAAA… Each day we are getting better and that is all a coach can ask for.”

The Lady Gators will compete in non-region play until beginning the Region 7-AAAA slate at home against crosstown rival Stratford on Sept. 9.
