Berkeley County students will have the option to take online classes.
Berkeley County School Board voted 6-0 to approve a new district policy allowing online learning. The vote came during the board’s regular Tuesday meeting in Moncks Corner.
Board members Sheldon Etheridge, Frank Wright and Kathy Schwalbe were absent for the vote.
The online learning program is through the state’s VirtualSC, which serves kindergarten through 12th grade.
The board had originally considered limiting the program to high school students, but revisions to the policy between the first and final reading made the program available to all students. Courses through VirtualSC reflect courses offered in a traditional classroom, like AP European History and 8th grade Language Arts, but most classes are offered for 8th grade and above.
According to the policy, the distance, online learning courses are for students at schools that don’t offer the course, students unable to make the offered course due to unavoidable scheduling conflict, students who are medically homebound, students who have been suspended, and students who need the course for credit recovery or graduation.
Like regular courses, students will have to complete prerequisites. They will also have to obtain approval from the principal, and adhere to district policy for behavioral codes and attendance requirements.
