Hanahan opened the season with a tight loss to former region foe James Island on Friday night.

The Trojans, moved up to Class AAAA in the most recent realignment, knocked off the Hawks 29-27 at Wiley Knight Stadium.

Reggie Rosario’s 34-yard field goal with less than seven minutes left was the difference for James Island. The Trojans also had a pair of goal line stands in the fourth quarter.

They made new coach Ike Allred a winner in his debut.

Running back Vontre Howard scored two short rushing touchdowns for the Hawks, while fellow running back Cyrone White also scored on a short run.

Receiver Saaehim Brooks had a 10-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Walt Fagan.

James Island led 21-7 and 26-13 in the second quarter before Hanahan rallied to take the lead, 27-26, in the third quarter on Howard’s second 4-yard touchdown run.

Hanahan travels to county rival Timberland Friday. The Hawks won 41-0 last season.
