Man accused of starving, killing hundreds of dogs pleads guilty

File photo Loney Garrett, 66, walks into his February 2013 bond hearing. This week, he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of ill treatment of animals.

The Berkeley County man accused of 43 counts of ill-treatment of animals has pleaded guilty to 10 of the charges. The other 33 were dropped as part of the plea deal.

The grisly discovery of hundreds of dead dogs and dozens of dogs clinging to life at a property outside of Goose Creek made national news in early 2013.

Loney Garrett, 66, was working with Berkeley County Animal Control at the time of the seizure, according to Garrett’s lawyer Melisa Gay.

“He was trying to comply,” Gay said.

Garrett declined comment to the media after the hearing.

Gay described Garrett as “a good man” who was trying to help the animals.

“It just got out of hand. This is not a person who viciously did anything,” Gay said. “He is an older man who, unfortunately, other people would basically dump dogs on.”

She said that things got worse on his property in 2011 when Garrett went in for prostate cancer surgery and his son did not properly care for the dogs.

Sentencing for Garrett will be held at a later date.
