Molina Healthcare partnered with Helping Hands of Goose Creek to help feed some hungry families Thursday, Aug. 21.

Molina, a California-based company focused on providing health care services for families with limited resources, opened in the Lowcountry at the beginning of the year. Because a main focus of the company is community outreach, a joint effort with Helping Hands seemed a natural fit, said Cathy Rosado, Director of Community Engagement for Molina.

“We had heard about the work Michelle (Arredondo, Helping Hands director) did,” Rosado said. “What Helping Hands does is perfectly aligned with our community outreach mission.”

Molina employees donated, delivered and helped distribute 817 pounds of food to 35 families Thursday morning at the Helping Hands facility off Central Avenue.

The company encourages volunteer work through a benefit that pays employees their regular pay plus their hourly rate for every volunteer hour donated by the employee.

“The company wants their employees out in the community helping,” Rosado said. “A main part of our mission is better health for families in need. This is what we’re doing here today.”

Rosado said Thursday’s donation is the first of many joint efforts between her company and Helping Hands. Future endeavors might include nutrition education, literature on health-care resources for families who come in seeking help, and more food donations.

“We expect to do a lot more with Michelle,” she said. “She does some excellent work here, and we want to be a part of it.”
