Planning commission working on updated landscape ordinance

The City of Goose Creek Planning Commission met Aug. 5 as it continues to work on updating its commercial landscape ordinance.

The group is in the process of refining and enhancing the existing ordinance. The goal is to ensure environmentally responsible designs for parking lots and other large developed tracts that are also economically feasible, according to Planning and Zoning Manager Sarah Hanson.

“Right now our landscape ordinance is covered in three sections of our overall zoning ordinance,” Hanson said. “This process is a way for us to make the landscape section more user-friendly and more current.”

Hanson outlined some of the ideas that will be considered in a rough draft that included feedback provided by commissioners in past meetings. She also presented some examples of commercial landscaping designs that effectively meet the intended goal of economic feasibility and environmental responsibility.

Azalea Square in Summerville and the old farmers market property near Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia were presented as designs that meet the stated intentions the city hopes to implement.

Both make extensive use of long medians planted with trees and shrubbery and have fewer large expanses of impervious asphalt surfaces.
