The Goose Creek Gators got their first live action of the preseason on Friday when North Augusta and Berkeley rolled into John Fulmer Field.
It was a typical first scrimmage, with some positives to talk about but mostly Gators coach Chuck Reedy felt there are plenty of things to work on.
Reedy gave his team mixed reviews though he wasn’t exactly expecting mid-season form. They played without quarterback Pedro Manigault, fullback Evan Ulery and wide receiver Deondre Daniels, the team’s leading returning receiver and state champion sprinter.
Daniels also plays defense in the secondary.
“It was very ragged early on offensively so I was a little disappointed in that,” Reedy said. “But defensively we were as good as we’ve been this early. I was really pleased with the way the defense ran around.”
Backup quarterback Dominique Jefferson was thrust into the starting spot when Manigault was lost for the year last week with a knee injury.
“I thought he did a good job stepping in,” Reedy said. “He hasn’t got a lot of work at quarterback… He’s got to be the guy and I thought he responded well.”
Berkeley was a late addition to the scrimmage after missing out on a scrimmage a night earlier with Wando.
The Gators were set to tangle with Greenwood on Tuesday in Lexington before hosting Hanahan on Friday.
“Greenwood is supposed to be really good so we’re going to find out how good or how not good we are,” Reedy said.
Hanahan could also present a test. The Hawks have won 11 games each of the last two seasons.
The last dress rehearsal of the preseason will be in Sertoma on Aug. 21 against West Ashley.
The Gators begin the regular season Aug. 30 in Dayton, Ohio against Pickerington Central of Ohio.
