Suspect named in bowling alley incident

Goose Creek Police have identified the man arrested after an incident Tuesday evening at Royal Lanes bowling alley on Central Avenue in Goose Creek, police spokesman John Grainger said Wednesday afternoon.

Gary Curtis Fraley, 47, of 117 Balbriggan Drive in Goose Creek, was taken into custody just after 7 p.m. Tuesday after a Goose Creek SWAT team used a taser to subdue him following a standoff of at least an hour.

Grainger said Fraley has been charged with assault and battery and kidnapping, and that investigators intend to charge Fraley with attempted murder and possibly other charges.

Police responded to a 911 call in reference to shots fired in the building at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The report said Fraley went to the owner’s office, where he produced a gun and held owner Steven Tsafos, of North Charleston, hostage. The reason for the confrontation has not yet been explained, but the report referenced an earlier reported incident with Fraley at the same location.

Fraley’s wife is the manager of the bowling center.

According to the arrest report, witnesses said they could hear an argument in the office prior to a gunshot. The suspect had an “unspecified dispute” with the owner, Grainger said Tuesday.

Tsafos was able to leave the office with the suspect still inside, and that is when a shot was fired. At that point, the suspect barricaded himself in the office.

Police responded shortly after that, evacuated the bowling alley, and established a perimeter around the outside of the building.

What followed was about one hour of negotiation between the suspect and police, including a hostage negotiator from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. At some point after those negotiations, Fraley was Tased by the SWAT team and taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
