Veteran journalist Steve McDaniel has joined The Gazette’s editorial staff as a news and crime reporter. McDaniel’s beat will include Goose Creek City Council.
McDaniel comes to The Gazette from Wilmington, NC, where he worked in a host of capacities for the award-winning Wilmington Star News, a daily newspaper.
His latest duties at the Star News included page design, copy editing and writing.
McDaniel is a graduate of Wofford College.
“We are excited to have a journalist with Steve’s qualifications join our news gathering team,” Summerville Communications Publisher Steve Wagenlander said. “His addition further demonstrates all of our newspaper’s commitment to quality journalism and the communities we are fortunate to serve.”
“Steve was a great find for The Gazette, and I can’t wait for Goose Creek to get to know him,” Summerville Communications Editor Frank Johnson said. “He is a veteran, and he is going to do great things in Goose Creek.”
In addition to Goose Creek City Council, McDaniel will also cover the crime beat in both The Gazette and its sister paper, The Berkeley Independent in Moncks Corner.
McDaniel’s hire means the collective news staff at the three newspapers that make up Summerville Communications – The Gazette, The Independent, and The Summerville Journal Scene – is as large as it has been in over 10 years.
McDaniel, who enjoys following the Braves, Gamecocks and Wofford Terriers, said he is excited to be in the Lowcountry.
“I’m a South Carolina native who is thrilled to have returned to his home state after a quarter-century of living ‘up north’ in Wilmington,” McDaniel said. “When I’m not chasing government and crime stories in Berkeley County, I’m spending time with my wife, Michelle, and our three lovable mutts, Petey, Ruby and Jack.”
