Post 166 ends season short of state

  • Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Rob Gantt/Gazette Bryce Singletary was one of the top hitters and pitchers this season for Goose Creek Post 166.

It was a lighter slate than normal all the way around for Goose Creek Post 166 this summer.

With only two other teams in League 1, the local American Legion baseball team had about half the schedule it typically does.

The campaign ended earlier than usual too. Post 166 lost a first-round series to Georgetown, 3-1, to finish the season with a 10-11 record overall. On the positive side, Goose Creek was League 1 champion for the fourth straight year with a 7-1 league mark.

“The positive thing was that we accomplished the goal we set out to achieve, and that was to make baseball in the area better,” Post 166 coach Josh Kubisz said. “The players that chose to join the legion team got playing time. They got good coaching, good competition and they all got better… It’s hard to complain when you do that and win the league again.”

Kubisz, who served as Post 166 coach along with Aaron Preston, said almost the whole squad could return next summer.

The team’s top hitters were Zack Gonzales, Asher Smith, Christian Sillanpaa, Tyler Rio and Bryce Singletary. They all batted over .300. Gonzales had three home runs and led the team in slugging percentage.

Rio and Michael Cedotal were the top two pitchers. Bryce Singletary was solid in relief along with Chris Zurcher and Chase Hughes.
