Crowfield ready for CCAA swim meet; thousands expected

Steve McDaniel/Gazette The Crowfield Golf and Country Club pool was set up Friday to host the 47th annual Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association Championship swim meet this weekend.

The Crowfield Golf and Country Club pool will be a busy place this weekend.

More than 1,000 swimmers ages 6 to 18 competing for 22 area teams are converging on the Goose Creek facility for the 47th annual Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association Championships, along with parents, friends, coaches and support staff.

Stratford High School swim coach Jennifer Condon is in charge of bringing the event to her home pool. It has been held at the Jewish Community Center in West Ashley for the past 17 years, but construction of the new Addlestone Hebrew Academy there made this one-year move necessary.

Condon actively campaigned to host the meet, seeing it as an opportunity to showcase the facility and the surrounding community.

“I’ve been sitting at this event for 30-odd years,” Condon said Friday as she and her staff of volunteers completed preparations. “I would think about how I could do this or do that differently. Now I have my chance.

“I look at this as a sort of tryout (for other events),” she added. “This is a great opportunity to make Goose Creek look good, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the city’s help and a great group of parents that goes the extra mile for the kids and our school.”

Condon also pointed out that meet records will be set at all events this year, due to the fact that the Crowfield pool is a 25-yard pool. Past meets were all held in a 25-meter pool.

Condon said the JCC estimates a total attendance of about 10,000 for the event, based on past competitions.
